My book for the trip had to fit one main requirement: long enough that it would last 12 days of travel by plane and train. I took my friend Camby's (and Oprah's) advice and took Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth.
It just happened to be about building cathedrals in Europe (well that and a whole lot more). It was serendipitous and made me seem like I knew something about church construction when we visited them. Fantastic read, and it lasted until we flying high over Glasgow on our way home.
